Nick Unselfish Book

After 31 years of marriage, Nick Silverio’s dear wife, Gloria, was killed in a car accident caused by a speeding driver. Despite the tragedy, Nick wanted to continue her memory and spirit through charitable works.

He knew there was no better way to do this than to focus on the people she continually helped most in her life: children and the elderly. Gloria and Nick had had two miscarriages and therefore had no children of their own, but they were godparents to 14 children and had nurtured all the nieces and nephews in their family.

Nick researched and found that the Florida Legislature had passed a Safe Haven Law in July 2000. This law allows parents to “leave your baby, up to 7 days old, with an employee at any hospital, emergency medical services station or with a fire fighter at any fire station in Florida.” Nick felt it was an immeasurable work of goodness to help save little lives, the most innocent and helpless among us. He decided to make this his new purpose in life.

He created the Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, a 501(c)(3) Florida not-for-profit organization and named the first major project “A Safe Haven for Newborns” in response to the tragedy of newborn abandonment in Florida. Nick vowed to turn his own life-altering tragedy into an all-out effort to save the lives of voiceless, innocent, helpless newborns.

“Without our services,” Nick says, “many, if not most of the over 200 babies saved to date would not be here today, living in loving adoptive homes, reaching for the world. We believed from the beginning that if we saved one life, all of our efforts would be worthwhile.”

A Safe Haven for Newborns is offered to everyone in Florida, especially young women who are hiding their pregnancy and who might otherwise abandon their unwanted newborn in a dumpster, field, canal, or some other unsafe place – an unthinkable act, but an act of panicked desperation by mothers who believe themselves to be abandoned, without support or resources.

A Safe Haven for Newborns has gained national and international attention and has become a prototype, setting the standard for any affiliated program.

Nick used his own money to start the organization, and he draws no salary from the non-profit. He just feels this is his purpose in life, and since the death of his wife, it’s given him a way to honor her.

Nick is often reminded of a quote by Mark Twain: “The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.”

Nick now knows why he was born.

As 11- year- old Gloria Hope says, “I would not be here today if it wasn’t for ‘A Safe Haven for Newborns.’ Thank you, Uncle Nick. I love you.”
