Lydia’s (we named her Milagros, which means miracle in Spanish) story:
Lydia was born with some physical challenges, but she doesn’t know it. Lydia is intelligent and has a wonderful inquisitive mind, a friendly outgoing personality and so very, very sweet, with a big heart. The love she has for her parents and their love for her is so very special.
Nick Silverio – Lydia’s mother contacted us prior to her birth. At the time she did not know Lydia would have special needs but she had already decided for the Safe Haven option.
Not all adoption agencies have families wanting or able to take care of special needs children, so we were asked along with some adoption agencies to reach out to our communities explaining that Lydia was a special little girl and would be a blessing to a family who would adopt her. I received calls & emails from all over the country including the Netherlands but within a few days, an adoption agency placed little Lydia with the Casady family.
Please meet Lydia:
Lydia wrote this and asked me to read it to our guests at our Annual Gala.
Thanks, Uncle Nick, for asking me what Safe Haven for Newborns means to me. I would like to ask all of you to take a minute eight now and look around the room and notice how many people are here. If you were here last year, there were about 400 people. It looks like we have that and more here tonight. Now, imagine if 315 (babies saved) of you stood up right now and left the room. The room would be almost empty right? Well, that’s how many babies Safe Haven for Newborns has saved.
By saving babies’ lives, they are able to grow up and maybe they will become people that change the world for the better. Maybe one of them will become the President, maybe they will help save more babies. I don’t know what they will become but A Safe Haven gives them a chance.
14 years ago, money was given and I’m standing here tonight because of that. My name is Lydia and I am Safe Haven baby 48. My safe Haven name is Milagros, which means miracle in Spanish, but really all babies are miracles.
I’m a teenage girl who likes to draw and people are what I draw mostly. I also like to play on the laptop. During the spring and summer, I run track with DASA, my local US Paralympic Sport Club. I run the 100m, 200m and do long jump. I got a new personal best in all my events at least once this last year. I also got another cat since last year so now I have two cats, Bitty and Sweetie. I want to help save and foster kittens until they’re ready for their forever hones. I still want to be a mom, too. My favorite subject in school right now is science. This year I’m learning how playing games can improve cognitive development. This last summer I went to an overnight camp where in served as a Junior Camper Counselor to a girl who has less abilities than me. I really enjoyed it a lot and want to do it again.
Please consider supporting us, yes, I said us, as I will always be a part of the Safe Haven for Newborns family. I would not be here today if it wasn’t for A Safe Haven for Newborns. Thank you and have a great night.
