PAHOKEE, Fla. — A newborn is in good condition at a hospital after being dropped off at a Palm Beach County fire station.
The child was brought to the Pahokee fire station Monday night, where it was checked out by fire rescue personnel before being taken to the hospital.
Under Florida’s safe haven law, a parent can drop off a newborn within three days of birth at any fire station or hospital. Parents won’t be investigated, prosecuted or forced to identify themselves as long as there are no signs of abuse.
Fire Rescue Capt. Craig Prusansky says this was his first experience with a safe haven child.
According to the advocacy group A Safe Haven for Newborns, 148 babies have been left at safe havens statewide since 2000 when the law was passed. Ten were left in Palm Beach County.
