Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Silverio.
Nick, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Turning a tragedy into saving lives. I am the Founder of A Safe Haven for Newborns. My wife Gloria was involved in a fatal car accident in 1999 caused by a speeding driver. We were married for 32 years and although we had no children due to miscarriages, one on a Christmas eve, we had a deep love for children and served as Godparents to 14 children.
One night, in my dimly lit kitchen unable to sleep and flipping mindlessly through a magazine, my fingers stopped on a page and I was compelled to look. The article stated that birthmothers were abandoning their newborns in unsafe places around the world, often not surviving. It was an escalating worldwide crisis. I immediately felt called to do whatever I could to save the life of a precious, innocent newborn and at the same time continue Gloria’s memory and honor for her love for children. So, I created the Gloria M. Silverio Foundation, 501(c)3 and named our only project- A Safe Haven for Newborns”. Our mission is to eliminate the ultimate in infant abuse, abandonment through education, prevention, grassroots community involvement and direct assistance.
Fast-forwarding to 2020:
We formed networks and partnerships in both the public and private sectors. Hospitals and 24/7 staffed Fire/Ems stations display our logo at their facility. We continue with statewide community outreach/education campaigns through social media technology, T.V., Radio and the Digital media. The lifeline of our organization is our statewide confidential, 24/7 multilingual, referral helpline.
We believed from the beginning if we saved one life all of our efforts would be worthwhile. As of this writing, 317 precious newborns (311 in Florida, 5 in other states and one little one in the country of Honduras) have been saved from the dangers of abandonment, living with their forever families and over 5,000 women assisted in their time of need/crisis.
My favorite quote by Mark Twain- “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why”. I found out why.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that funding was the major struggle since we do not charge for any of our services. I provided the necessary funding for quite some time. We now rely on our annual fundraising events, Gala (Oct. 17th, 2020), Run/Walk (Feb. 2021) and Golf… Tee off for a cause (May 8th, 2020), the generosity of donors and some grants.
Please tell us about A Safe Haven for Newborns.
A Safe Haven for Newborns speaks up for innocent precious newborns and is dedicated to reaching and assisting pregnant young women before they reach the crisis stage. A Safe Haven for Newborns is offered to everyone, especially young women with an unexpected pregnancy, no support, no resources, hiding their pregnancy and in a panic situation, abandoning their newborn, often resulting in death.,
Our confidential helpline receives 2,000 calls annually. The callers have ranged from as young as 13 to 41 years old. We assist them as they make their decision in the best interest of their baby and themselves, whether with referral counseling, parenting, health-related issues or confidentially placing their newborn with a Safe Haven for Newborns. We focus on getting the mom help in the community in which she lives, and quite often she will decide to be able to keep her child. We believe it takes great courage and compassion for a mom to want her child to have a future she cannot provide.
A Safe Haven for Newborns is never judgmental and assists everyone. It is an absolute joy to see and know that these children are growing up spiritually, physically & psychologically. We have one employee, everyone else is a volunteer, including myself.
One of the many Safe Haven for Newborn testimonies:
I ignored my pregnancy for over 6 months, no pre-natal care, hiding my pregnancy, but knew I need to get help and began searching online.. I quickly found A Safe Haven for Newborns. Even though it was not in my state, decided to contact them and I am so very thankful I did.
I had many questions. The first thing they stressed was to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. So, they connected me to a social worker at a hospital in my city. I did not have transportation so they arranged and paid for my transportation throughout the remaining months of my pregnancy. My baby was born healthy. I decided Safe Haven was the best option for my baby. I have another child and thru Amazon, they sent me clothes and other necessities for her. The people at A Safe Haven for Newborns are very special.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Family Time… Playing and excelling at sports, especially football …and many childhood friendships that still exist today.
